Bitter Birds’ dark vibes have earned them the mantle of ‘dark pop royalty’ in their home town of Austin, TX. Guitarist/vocalist Singer Mayberry and her drummer/vocalist husband David Lujan crank out black-hewn indie-pop. Foreboding basslines, played through a customized Wurlitzer, while Lujan simultaneously plays drums, serve as the fulcrum for their songs, providing an effective emotive counterweight to Mayberry’s resolute high-end vocals. Sparsely deployed guitar and drums finish out the duo’s tasteful arrangements.

Beauty and Foreboding – KUTX 98.9

By far, at the time of this Austin Music Minute entry, the following has to be one of the best descriptions Bitter Birds has encountered in describing their music:  Someone who’d seen their show declared that “Bitter Birds is Mazzy Star meets Joy Division.” If that isn’t a badass compliment, your AMM host doesn’t know what is. Guitarist/vocalist Singer Mayberry and percussionist David Lujan embrace the darker shades of pop, incorporating brooding bass and melodies saturated in etherial hues for a sound that’s gotten them comparisons to Pretty Girls Make Graves and early Cure. – Laurie Gallardo, Austin Music Minute KUTX. Dark Pop Love – KUTX 98.9

Bitter Birds “lures the senses in with a brooding, slightly more experimental side of indie pop, which some fans have compared to early Cure – less poppy and more deliciously bleak.” – Laurie Gallardo, Austin Music Minute KUTX. Sept. 16, 2013

Bitter Birds, The Blackheart – www.readthehorn.com

“Dark indie pop coming straight outta ATX. Their haunting sound recalls the early singles of Seattle’s Pretty Girls Make Graves with a heavy Cure influence. Singer Mayberry (yes, that’s her name) has the voice of a dark angel and emotion oozes from every syllable of her vocals. Give these guys an album or two and I’m certain that they’ll carry themselves far.” – James Roberts, http://www.readthehorn.com, Sept. 26, 2013

Dream Pop, Bitter Birds – Sonic Vault Austin

“Guitar/Drummer duo Bitter Birds have been honing a dreamy rock sound on par with the spacious meandering fretwork of Pedro The Lion. Dark vibes saturate each song, leaving plenty of etherial gloom to be pierced by the lilting vocals of Singer Mayberry.”

Blacklist 7″ Review, 2012 – The Austin Chronicle

“guitarist/vocalist Singer Mayberry and her drummer/vocalist husband David Lujan crank out black-hewn indie-pop…Foreboding basslines serve as the fulcrum for both tracks here, providing an effective emotive counterweight to Mayberry’s resolute high-end vocals. Sparsely deployed guitar and drums finish out the trio’s tasteful arrangements. Paired with exquisite silk-screened cover art, Bitter Birds deliver a complete package.” – Greg Beets, The Austin Chronicle, Dec. 28, 2012
